Here is a preview of this technique I used on a logo for a site I own.

Step 1

Launch Corel Video Studio and import a video by dragging it from the videos pane unto the timeline. I’m using this stock sea video that comes with VideoStudio, but you can use what ever you want.

Step 2

Now let us make our video look more old and grainy. Go to the video filters pane and drag the Film Pro filter unto your video.

Use the following settings I’ve highlighted. Be sure to click the preset in the bottom. This will make our video look more old-style, and better for what we want.

Step 3

Now let’s add a video panning filter to give a nice zoom effect, like the cameraman was zooming in on the building in the video. Edit the panning filter and click the first keyframe (it should already be selected) and set the zoom ratio to 100, and then center the box.

Image5

Now select the second, and last, keyframe and make the box smaller my dragging one of the corner nodes. Position it like so:

Click OK to exit the dialog and save your settings.

Step 4

Now I’m going to speed this up. Click the Playback speed button under the Video tab and lower the speed percent to 200%-250%, what ever seems best to you. I want to keep this video shorter. Playback might be jumpy, but it won’t be once you render it.

Step 5

Next drag a color block unto the timeline and overlap the video with it, like this:

Image7

Ok good. You can play around with lengths by dragging more/less, what ever works. Trial and error. :) Now go up to Effects and in the drop down box click Masks. Drag Mask A into the are between video 1 and the color block.

Image8

Drag the black color block as small as you can while  keeping it overlapped. This is important for a future step. Now we want to render this out. Go to the Share tab and click Create Video File and choose “Same as Project Settings”. Save it on your desktop, since it’s a temporary file. Once it’s done, which could take a while depending on your video and your computer, there should be a new video in the videos pane. Delete everything from your timeline and insert this new video.

Step 6

Add another block and overlap it again. We want this color block to start overlapping halfway though the colored-lines effect, right when the red starts to take over, so play around and see where exactly that is.

Image10

Now add another transition, but this time add the “Power Off” transition from the F/X menu. Play back the video, you should get the effect demonstrated at the start of this tutorial. If not, don’t worry. It’s all about timing, maybe you had the Mask A transition to long, or to short. Just experiment with different transitions and time lengths and videos, you’ll get something good… hopefully. :P
